Scottish music comes in many forms - and there are more than a few varieties of Scottish music. First of all, there are the summer shows you will find throughout Scotland, mostly aimed at tourists. These shows host a predominance of tartan, bagpipes, highland dancing, comedy and songs of hills and heather - essentially the image many tourists have of Scotland. They follow a successful recipe made famous by the television series The White Heather Club broadcast in the 1960s. Artists such as Kenneth McKellar, Peter Morrison, Will Starr, etc. were favorites around the music halls and still are!
Scotland has given the musical community a lot of writers, singers, and musicians. Some of the most well-known Scottish artists, internationally, include Donovan, Ian Anderson (from Jethro Tull), Mark Knopfler and David Knopfler from Dire Straits, Average White Band, Bay City Rollers, electronic musician Jawnae, Sheena Easton, the indie band Belle & Sebastian, David Byrne, Franz Ferdinand, the Cocteau Twins, Annie Lennox, the band Nazareth, Primal Scream, Paul Wilson (bass guitarist for Snow Patrol), and many more.
So next time you're in Scotland, be sure to not only pick up some Scottish souvenirs like traditional Celtic clothing, Tartan cloths, or other more well-known Scottish goods - but add some Scottish music to your Scottish Gifts - because music is something Scotland is known for!
